Maytag and Whirlpool Freezers

Maytag and Whirlpool come together to provide freezer excellence

Although Whirlpool recently bought Maytag, the two brands co-exist happily. Whirlpool also offers Amana freezers. All Whirlpool freezers are manufactured by W.C. Wood's by license.

These brands and the quality that stands behind them remain strong and shoppers associate reliability and durability with Maytag and Whirlpool. Whirlpool has been in the appliance business since 1911 and Maytag has a history that starts in 1893.

Maytag freezers

Maytag has a line of 6 models of freezers to choose from -- 4 upright and 2 chest freezers. All but one model is Energy Star compliant. Uprights range in size from 16 to 20 cubic feet and range in price from $450 to $700 (manufacturer's suggested retail price). The two chest freezers are 16 and 22 cubic feet, and cost $450 and $580 respectively.

  • hose adaptor and drain (for manual defrost models)

All models are available in white only. Maytag does offer a warranty and "Extended Service Plans" that you can purchase at or after time of purchase.

Whirlpool freezers

Whirlpool offers three types of freezers: chest, upright and "sidekicks." Sidekicks are large refrigerator freezers that have a 17.7-cubic-foot upright freezer attached (side-by-side) to the refrigerator.

Whirlpool offers a choice of 4 Sidekicks in white or stainless steel finishes. Prices range from $1,900 to $2,200. All Sidekick models are Energy Star compliant, have an interior light and the fast-freeze option. Other features that they may or may not have depending on the model you choose include:

  • adjustable temperature control
  • storage bins
  • glass shelves
  • ice-maker ready
  • rollers for easy cleaning and moving

Whirlpool has 6 models of upright freezers that range in size from 11.6 cubic feet (for $450) to 24.7 cubic feet (for $800) and are only available in white. Only 3 of the 6 models are Energy Star compliant, but they all offer the fast-freeze capability. Other features that they may or may not have depending on the model you choose include:

  • manual defrost or frost-free
  • adjustable temperature control
  • temperature alarm
  • interior light
  • power-on indicator light
  • storage bins
  • security lock
  • rollers for easy cleaning and moving
  • ice-maker ready
  • reversible door swing
  • leveling legs

Whirlpool also has 6 models of chest freezers to choose from. They range in size from 5.3 cubic feet (for $230) to 21.7 cubic feet (for $600). Only 3 of the 6 models are Energy Star compliant, but they are all manual defrost and have adjustable temperature control. Other features that they may or may not have depending on the model you choose include:

  • storage baskets and bins
  • power-on indicator light
  • temperature alarm
  • interior light
  • security lock
  • drain with cover

Whirlpool offers a standard warranty with the option to purchase an extended warranty.
